Relay for Life is a charitable endeavor that has been going on in SL since 2005.
I am just going to cover the basics of it and will leave all links at the end for further reading that goes into everything in much more detail and gives you a thorough insight into it.
It all started from one avatar in SL approaching The ACS (American Cancer Society)With the suggestion of holding a fundraiser in Second Life and so it began. $5,000 was raised from that one fundraising endeavour. Relay For Life is also in operation outside of SL.
From that first fundraiser until today more than $4 mil has been raised which is pretty awesome to say the least!
“More ways than ever to Relay
“The Relay For Life movement is dedicated to helping communities attack cancer. Through funds donated, time given, or awareness raised, our communities are teaming up – virtually or in-person – to make a difference. When we rally together in the fight against cancer, we can accomplish anything.”
“Funds raised are also used to help fund the American Cancer Society’s research program and Hope Lodge program”
What do residents do for relay for life within SL?
In SL, residents group together in teams. There are various camp sites set up and the teams sell items to raise funds. Which is very much what happens outside of SL, but there are of course specific events that residents have made that are SL exclusive.
The ACS have their own sim within SL. This sim offers lots of help and advice and chronicles each years RFL event. There is also a memorial area where you can leave a memorial for a departed loved one. You can pick up fundraising packs, and there’s info about being a RFL sponsor.
Hope lodge is run by the ACS and provides a bed for cancer patients and their care givers to stay if the best treatment can be found in another state.
This takes a big burden from patients and their care givers. They have their own rooms, and wonderful services at their disposal. A community kitchen, laundry, recreation. Along with information and support. This is a valuable “life line” for all concerned.
